Sunday Afternoon

Sunday was uneventful/eventful. I know, that makes metric tonnes of sense. Bear with me, I apparently don’t make much sense right now regardless. For us, the usual. Homemade buttermilk pancakes for breakfast, the recipe I’ve used so many times that I don’t need a recipe.

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tablespoon of butter/margarine
1 tablespoon honey

2 cups flour – that can be white, whole wheat, or half and half, try it whole wheat and you’ll be surprised at how very fluffy it comes out, but we can’t finish a whole recipe worth because hi, FILLING. – 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp baking soda, grab a fork and whir that together a bit. Add 2 cups buttermilk (or a splash of lemon juice in 2 cups of milk) and mix until just blended. At this point you probably want your frying pan to be on and getting hot.
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter/margarine with 1 tablespoon of honey in the microwave while adding 2 eggs to your mix, don’t stir yet, just pop the yolks. Stir it all together until you don’t see yellow streaks anymore. It shouldn’t be watery but it should be pourable, if its too thick add a tablespoon at a time of water. When the pan is hot enough, start making pancakes. If you’re not sure if its hot enough, start the coffee first and then start making pancakes.

This makes enough for four people, and that means for us most often two parents, a toddler, and a guest adult. Not that we often have guests for Sunday breakfast, but it does happen. It did this week – my sister stayed over to dye her hair without killing my mother with the smell.

The morning service and Nicole visiting grandma and grandpa between services all went fairly normally. It was during the afternoon where things got unusual. Our quiet little street got quite busy with traffic. It turns out that the more major street just down the way was blocked off by police. There was guns and hostages and all sorts of shenanigans that you don’t really want in your neighbourhood. It really stinks how one or two apartment buildings can bring a nice neighbourhood down a notch. Phbbt.

After all the excitement had gone, Nicole and I went for a walk (in the other direction) and took some pictures at a local school.

IMG_0083Remember how I said there will be shirring and there was some already? Right now I have a nasty, nasty sinus cold. This morning it’s actually feeling a bit better. But before the nasty sinus cold happened, I made this little shirred dress. It’s a bright green fabric covered in cheerful apples, and I love it. IMG_0098 When you’re still fairly small, jumping even a few inches is quite the daredevil activity, and Nicole is quite the thrillseeker indeed as far as jumping (with supervision) is involved. (She is never a daredevil without being sure that somebody is watching her and ready to apply bandaids, should the need arise.)IMG_0110 Sometimes there was falling on her bum instead of jumping forwards.IMG_0116 Quite the exciting little outing, as you can see.IMG_0140After the jumping there was some running. Naturally it was the running that caused several rounds of falling and scraping things such as knees and elbows. Eventually it was noted that one of those scraped elbows was bleeding a wee bit, so home again home again jiggity jig. Once we reached the driveway, she started slowly building up from a sniffle to a little sobble to, once we got in the door and she was relatively sure that Papa was in earshot, a full-blown wail. He was quite sure she was sorely injured, and seemed a bit taken aback at my apparent lack of concern. He missed the dramatic buildup and didn’t realize it was solely for his benefit, to reap daddy-cuddles. I played along and there was Polysporin and bandaids and kisses all-around. Kisses aren’t going to heal everything, may as well use those powers while I’ve got them.

This is actually from before the walk, not after, but as you can see, Papa-cuddles are harvested wherever and whenever they can be.

And in case you think my family is oh so photogenic and beautiful, here are some outtakes.

IMG_0079 IMG_0080 No injury here, just offense. I think just that Papa got up and she was sitting by herself now. She has just woken up from her nap 15 minutes or so beforehand, and she is very easily offended just after a nap. This face was quickly remedied by my suggestion that we go for a walk, and as you could see from the above pictures, a walk solved this face indeed.
