creative weekend

I DRAWLERZ A PICTURE MUM Here's a shawl from Ottobre Winter 08. Everyone and thier dog is making the cape, including yours truly. I accidently traced the shawl too and then realized i had enough leftovers to make it. I thought it would be kind of stupid and I'd hate it but she wore it all day and loved it, and I got tons of compliments. I never thought crisscross and tie in the back a shawl before this ottobre. Nicey nice!
Try not to stare at the poor baby's facerash. I'm waiting on the call from the dermatologist. It is just an unknown rash that refuses to go away! She's been through a few treatments already. We think it might be eczema...

I bought this sweater for less than a buck just for making these leggings with. From my tutorial!
How sweet are those folded rib cuffs on the ankles. I love it. They just seem so cozy. That's just how the sweater was, although it wasn't intended to be folded (the seam shows a bit, who cares though, you don't notice it unless you're, well, me.) I folded the cuffs over before i did all my measuring and stuff because I wanted them to be like this. This way she'll get more wear too, when they get too short i just uncuff them.
My model seems to have gotten over modelling lately. We have some slight lack of cooperation going on. lol.
I made that ottobre winter 08 cape as well but no pictures yet as my model is down for the night and i only just finished!
In exciting news... my brother is getting married! Which means... I get to make a flowergirl dress! Actully she will be performing the ringbearer function but dressed as a flowergirl. :D
oh yeah and my brother gets married, too. LOL. (and i get to make a dress!)

My DIY is hardcore-er than your DIY....

First, you're going to take a second and marvel at this picture for a moment. DD has decided interior decorating is her new thing, and she put together this lovely little piece de resistance for a christmastime livingroom centerpiece. It is comprised of several stolen christmas ornaments off the tree (thankfully our waistlevel-and-down ornaments are all stuffed animal type things), my dirty cereal bowl and spoon (also stolen), a soother, and a red Coupe Car. Now that you've all marked on your calendars to give her a call in twenty or so years to decorate your houses... This is something I've done before and will do again, but I'm always kind of shocked when it turns out okay. (it has turned out not okay in the past. VERY not okay)

...Cutting my own hair. This above is the back/top... below is the side. (note the oddly large head. TO FIT MY BRAINS.)

I am not missing any pieces in the middle of the side, my straightener and I aren't talking much these days so the hair just kind of wandered off over there. It's super short in the back and actually the front chunk is almost shoulder length when i'm not making wierdy pose attempts at taking pictures of my own hair.
I like to think the pictures don't do it justice, but then again how much 'action shot' do you really get out of a mirror. lol.

I just do it in the bathroom with a pair of scissors, dry hair, and a medicine cabinet that allows me to see most of my hair at any given time. The fact that it is choppy layers makes it really easy.
I wasn't planning on this, i was watching a podcast and some chick had funky short hair and i wanted it but my DH whines if the hair gets too short so I decided my hair was boring and needed some pepper. Jokes on him, my hair is SUPER short, it just doesn't LOOK that way, especially from the front. sneakysneaky.

Photo Jewelry

this + chain + printed out photo = this:

my DH thinks it is ugly but I love it and think it's funky and funny. You can't really see it clearly in this picture but this is the photo i used for the necklace

Of course in the actual necklace it's tiny but you still get the funny feel from the glasses. This was taken on her first birthday.

I made a few others too but gave them to my mom before i thought to take a picture of them. I find sepia looks really pretty but isn't super clear, and b/w looks really classic and neat but needs to be really sharp. Because the diamond glaze / liquid glass blurs things a bit anyways this project works perfectly with photos printed on any kind of paper.

wowface! + sweaterdress

This is what seeing a christmas tree for the first time that you remember looks like:
Apparently after the initial 'wow' factor wears off, the desire to destory and dismantle kicks in. lol.
Speaking of dismantling things... I dismantled a size small Liz Claiborne merino+lambswool sweater that I paid less than a dollar for and turned it into a pretty and incredibly soft and cozy little sweaterdress. I got a bunch of compliments on it, and even more when people realized that I made it myself. I love it because it is cozy and warm and I want to give her lots of cuddles in it because she is warm and fuzzy and yum.
Sorry I don't have any good standing pictures. She was excited today so 'standing' and 'running' kind of went hand in hand. She was such a good poser for a while there but i think she is over being a model and on to greater things (destroying the house/christmas tree.)

I whipped it up last night at about 11pm. LOL. Because... I had bought her some cute new boots that this would have looked adorable with!!!! BUT the boots turned out to be too small... as did the sunday shoes that fit her last week. She's a little weed. She is my only little baby and she does not seem to appreciate that fact very much, as she keeps trying to grow out of it.

Joy to the World... or at least my Livingroom!

Man, am I psyched for Christmas. I have already made my Christmas Countdown Calender... I thought I posted the link to this already so I didn't need to fav it but apparently I was WRONG. If anyone knows who made the pdf for these, could they send me the link so I can post it?

I finished my Cup Day Twirl Skirt and i'm not in love with it colour-wise because I just went with some random stuff from my stash (love the green, the pink should have been brighter) but I just wanted to try it and I LOVE IT. and it's pretty easy. TOTALLY RECOMMEND.

And I've pumped out a few of these hats, as soon as my IRL user picks her colour I will list them on Etsy. The green will go up almost for sure though, she was teetering between pink and white. The picture of the green one, doesn't really display the hat but I just love her expression. That is one of my favourite kid-expressions. 'wow'

I made more fuuuuudge. This time is hearts. Yay, hearts. I think these silicone things were from Dollarama and intended to be valentine's day ice cubes. Ohoho, i love thier holiday silicone shapes. Nothing is better for making chocolate than dollarama silicone molds cos the silicone is so thin it is easy to warp it and get out the chocolate without smooshing.

We totally put up the tree today and tonight I hope to finish decorations for the livingroom (for now) to my satisfaction, then I can take a picture and post it. I'm sitting here typing wearing a christmas plaid apron (in the middle of the cleaning spree) that I gleefully donned after finding it in a Christmas box. Ohoho, I am so in the spirit! (hopefully fending DD off of the tree doesn't dampen that spirit over the next few weeks LOL)

Good Day

Today was a good day, even though i didn't really 'achieve' much. I went to a women's morning bible study at my church and enjoyed it, I'll definitely be going again. Next week there is no study meeting but there will be a free craft period instead. I'm always up for scheduled crafting time!

In the afternoon I went shopping with a galpal, and bought... NOTHING. I know. Pretty nuts. But I did fall in love with this jacket from Children's Place. So totally over-the-top crazy and I LOVE IT. My friend thinks I'm off my rocker, especially since the matching furry muff put me over the top, but I informed her that I live in a postcard world where everything is perfect and adorable and that she is welcome to join me. lol. I decided to wait until I go again on Monday with my SIL, and if it's still on that sale rack then it is FATE. And if it's not I will get it in whatever bigger size it is still there in! LOL. I love it so much.

After I finish posting this I'm going to finish my Cup Day Skirt and then I'm going to go on a rampage and put ruffles on everything I can get my grubby little hands on! Wrist cuffs, skirt edges, shirt hems. If there is a hem I will ruffle it! Yeah right, like I'm that motivated, but still, I'm loving the cuteness of little ruffles everywhere.

Hobo + FUDGE

So I'm a hobo now. Well, I have no job, or at least I don't work for anybody over the age of 14 months. My boss called me yesterday and told me she wanted to let me go because of my limited availability, and I told her that I was just about to talk to her the next day and suggest that she do just that. After they hired a new girl to replace one that quit, I suddenly had like one shift a week, which was obviously not because they needed me there. I didn't need the job, I figured it would be entertaining, and it was. But after a while I was just not a necessary fixture! The new girl (who, coincidentally, was my roomate a few years back!) needs the job to support herself, and is way more available. I don't begrudge anyone anything! I'm going to drop off my name tag along with some fudge for the staff meeting tonight, and a card to say goodbye and it was fun.

Speaking of fudge, I want to share the most sickeningly easy thing you can possibly do when you have company coming over last minute and no snacks to serve them, or you want to whip something up for somebody that looks 6million times more impressive than it really is... fudge!

1 bag of chocolate chips

1 can of sweetened condensed milk

put the above in a microwave safe bowl (plastic if you value your hands) at 50% power, 1 minute at a time and stirring at every minute. When you can see when you're stirring that it's starting to melt, stir it every thirty seconds. When it is all melted, put it in an icing bag (or, in my case, a cheap fold-over sandwich bag with a hole cut in it). This part is what really makes it impressive! Put the fudge in some some of mold. Ice cube trays work, especially silicone ones. My small ball came from a small ice cube tray with rounded silicone bottoms that I got from Dollarama. My bigger one looks sort of like a Reese's chocolate, I made that in a silicone mini-muffin pan!

When you're piping in the chocolate, just put your tip into the middle of your chocolate, don't move it, and just squeeze heavily until you're happy with how full it is. Your fudge should look smooth and pretty. If you try and get fancy by moving around the tip while squeezing, you could wind up making it look like a cow patty. If that's what you're aiming for, bless your heart, go ahead.
To really fancy these up, you can put things in the bottom or top. Bottom works best. Sprinkle in some walnuts before putting in the fudge... or Skor bits (big hit)... peanuts (add some peanut butter to your fudge if you're going to do this)... or pipe some white chocolate in before or after the fudge! (my cup shape one has some white chocolate in the bottom)
Then you can put it in either the fridge or freezer to set and keep, it won't make a big difference which one you choose, it will not get rock solid in the freezer.

(you likie the fabric in the background? it's out because I'm going to use it for either the ruffles or the body, haven't decided yet, of this Cup Day Twirl Skirt. Me likie <3

Sa-WWEEET!

This is the second time in two months I have won a blog draw! First I one an Amy Butler Solids pack from Sew, Mama, Sew! on one of thier Freebie Friday giveaways (considering I always forget to enter, that's amazing that I won that one, lol)

Now I just one the Indie Fixx Autumn Cornucopia Giveaway Prize #1! How sweet is that! What a big, awesome prize pack. I'll be sure you let you know what I think of all the Awesome Stuff when I get it, for sure! I'm so exciiiiittteeedd to get that stuff.

I'm also excited to start on some more refashioning... in a biggish town about 45 minutes from where I live, there is an MCC thrift store that has a bag sale all the time... a bag of clothes for $5, as much as you can stuff in the (big paper Sobey's) bag. (or rather, they do the stuffing, but they aren't stingy, in fact sometimes overly generous lol) Well, I found four pairs of cream coloured cargo pants for DH (he loves cream coloured cargo pants. Beyond anything else in the world. I think he loves proving how very clean he is when he isn't all dirty from work). Two big fat wide belts for $1 for both. a wool/merino soft fluffy yellow Liz Claiborne sweater to refashion into a sweaterdress for DD (so excited for that one.) and some other shirts to refashion into leggings and a tshirt dress for DD.

Holla at the Mennonites, they have the best thrift stores EVER! (Did I mention the Bumbo chair + tray for $6?! in mint condition! I don't need one, not at all. But i could not leave it behind)

P1000385

Excuse the crappy photo and end-of-the-day no-lipstick face, I do in fact have a pulse... but anyways. Look at me, I'm such a Dollar-wise Diva! The pants were like $30 at Winners... The shirt is 100% silk and found it at a thrift store and paid like $4 for it, the belt was one of the 50cent belts I mentioned... the earrings and cameo necklace are costume jewelry I got on clearance for $1 a piece.

What I'm Up To...

Check out these gorgeous yummers.
P1000327
Took me forever to do (assisted by my gorgeous little assistant, which may or may not have contributed to it taking forever... trying to fend her off the cookies, and then from eating the topping off the cookies...) I got the recipe here. It's not ridiculously hard, just time consuming.

And this little number is something I've been working on a little bit at a time for a while... a toddler blazer kind of a dealie. I used a short sleeve buttonup shirt for the base of the thing... threw in a lining because it was scratchy tweed... I'm only going to have two buttons, right on the top ... also, the sleeves turned out way too tight so I actually just cut them off hems and all to widen the whole dealie, and I think I'll do puffyish 3/4 sleeves.
 P1000323
I bought this as a remnant, and I'm hoping I can get a skirt out of it too. I think I had like .8 or .9 or something. (meters, eh.) I'm not sure if that will happen after I redo the sleeves but here's hoping. Otherwise I could just do a black or grey jumper dress under it too I suppose... (or make up a little dress pants pattern, bweeeee) (I doubt they would have the same level of class with the diaper in there though, lol)

Quick little link- check out this pretty and simple paper flower table setting from craftershock! lovely.

Inspired

So right now I'm just browsing the websites of some of my favourite stores, fashion-wise, looking for inspiration. I wish I could share some of my favourite pictures with you, but I know that would be copyright infringement. Suffice it to say that Macy's and Le Chateau are the websites of the day, especially Macy's and thier plus size stuff. As a size 16 it is nice to see certain styles I'm not sure I could pull off worn by curvier girls... not all of thier stuff is modelled by curvy women but a lot of it is. It's nice to be able to take a look at what I think could play up my best features and play down my worst ones... I have a folder in my computer of images that are zoomed in to my favourite parts of the pictures. White topstitching on a dark denim skinny jean really lengthening the leg... certain drapes, cuts, and colours... things like that. (if i can't right click on an image, i just printscreen it, paste it, and save that). Then I'll keep those inspirations and use parts of them when I make or buy patterns and fabrics.

I bought Christmas cookie cutters today! I saw a box of 12 for $5 at safeway, and even the little tin to keep them in was cute, so I snatched them up. I'll keep the tin out in the open in my kitchen to remind and inspire me to bake! Also in my baking plans, I plan to make this imitation girl scout cookie - Samoas aka Caramel De Lites. I have never tried them, I've never even seen a real live girl scout, but they look delish and I'll have to give them a go!

One last link before I go, I think everyone should check out One Pretty Thing. I'll add them to my sidebar next time I update it. I can't believe I've never shared them before, either. I visit this site every day, at least once a day! lol. Today they will be including my tutorial for leggings in thier daily DIY roundup. Thanks so much, Rachel! Both for sharing my tutorial and for taking the time to gather up so many inspirational ideas from blogs all over the net. I love your site!

Long Sleeve Tshirt to Toddler Leggings

I'd like to begin by pointing out that there is not a huge crotch area on these leggings. But we're working out something for toddlers here, their legs pretty much rub together anyways, at least mine's do. Plus we're doing stretchy leggings, not blue jeans, so I've found it doesn't matter. However I don't know that this would translate well to kids out of the diaper stage.

(cuffed variation - see bottom for special instructions)

1) take a pair of leggings/sweats/pants that do fit your toddler nicely to use as reference for length. The ones I use as reference here are a little short so I'm throwing in an extra bit. Don't forget to leave yourself a seam allowance, + waistband, when you measure. For these instrustions, add 'height of elastic x2' plus 3/4" for seam allowance.
You're measuring from under the waistband of the pair that you like, and then adding the above measurement.
I used nice thick sturdy pyjama bottom elastic I picked up at dollarama, because these pants from Joe had a waist like that and I liked the way they worked.

You want to mark on each side of the sleeve 1) the cutting line, which is the top of the waistband+hem measurement, and 2) the waist line, which is where the waist of your reference pants ended

Photobucket

measure the middle/crotch seam on your fitting pair of leggings/pants and mark that on your sleeve-pants, from the lower (waist) mark and down. then (on the opposite side of the sleeve's seams) cut down to that line.

Photobucket

With right/out sides together, pin your two legging legs together. Then sew along the pinned line. If you have a serger, then bless your little heart, you know what to do. If you don't, use whatever stitch tends to be kindest to knits on your machine. If you're not sure, experiment!

Photobucket

I used a nice fat ziggyzag. Then I trimmed it close. You finish your hem however you find works best, I decided to ziggyzag and trim but that's just me.

Photobucket

measure out your waistband on your little one. You want it to fit snugly. because the pj elastic can be pretty hardcore you don't want it to be too tight, just snug. Then pin and sew it together as shown. Be sure to actually measure on your toddler, and then once you sew it maybe go back and do it again.

(I did this for the tutorial when DD was sleeping and wound up with too big a waistband so now I have to take it in. But the tutorial still works, you can learn from my mistakes instead of just my triumphs alone. lol.)

Photobucket

Okay, bear with me as I try to explain how to finish this garment. Firstly you want to turn your pants inside out so the wrong side is facing outwards.
1)Mark out the front/back/left side/ right side on the elastic, and then pin it to your pants accordingly. your pants will possibly be bigger than your elastic, depending on the shirt you used, but that is fine, just as long as you have it lined up evenly. You want to pin it to the pants about 3/4" from the rough edge.
2)FOLD the pants/elastic over towards the inside of the pants, so the elastic is completely covered by fabric. Go around and take your pins out from inside the fold and repin each pin, through both layers of fabric and the elastic. You've formed your elastic casing!
3) Put the zipper foot on your sewing machine to make your life easier (eh? eh?) and line the elastic up to the edge the same way you would a zipper (if you haven't done this before you could either google it or you could use a regular foot and just be extra careful.)
4)sew the elastic casing shut without sewing on the elastic, stretching the elastic so your fabric isn't bunching as you sew.

Photobucket

You're done! Hoorah! Now, go out to the cheapest thrift store around and buy a bunch more longsleeve shirts and make lots of leggings for under skirts/dresses/tunics. Baby, it's cold outside!

Photobucket

Cuffed Variation:

For the cuffed variation, the only thing you're doing differently is folding the cuffs over (and pressing them if need be) the desired amount before starting step 1. You could stitch the cuffs in place if you wanted, but I didn't, then I have the option of flipping them back down when she gets a little bigger. Flipped cuffs look really great when you use a thin sweater with fitted sleeves and a ribbed cuff!

test with pic

maybe it was just that post that was the problem... I'll try a different pic to see how it works.

grrr

Okay as you may have noticed, I'm having a few posting issues all of the sudden. I would like to post a tutorial I made for turning a long sleeve Tshirt into toddler leggings but I'd like to try and resolve my issues first. In leiu of that, I shall post the post that I have been trying to post. This was written yesterday...

I haven't written much lately, I had a bit of a rough patch (read: all of october) but I think I've found back my rose tinted glasses and here we are!
firstly, check out Coverleaf, where you can check out and subscribe to online versions of tons of magazines, including Better Homes and Gardens, Parents, and other popular names.
On to me... I renewed/upped my sign up to Wardrobe Refashion for another six months, and during that time I may decide to pledge for life. It's fun and I check out the blog every day to see what my fellow refashionistas are up to! Check out Wardrobe Refashion here.

I whipped up this hat for nicole out of some stash-yarn... i'm going to try write out the pattern for it when I remake it, I plan on making a few and selling them on Etsy, and it wouldn't hurt if I could sell the pattern, too... and give it away to a few friends of course. : )

and here's a small awkward picture that shows the halloween costume I fashioned for myself! Unfortunatly between the black chair behind me and the scrappy shaggy skirt combined with the black leggings my legs look very sausagey, I assure you they are not, lol... and the face isn't so lovely either haha. hence me not making this picture any bigger lol.
I'm working up a tutorial on making toddler leggings out of long sleeve tshirts today or tomorrow, I'll likely post it here... I'm also thinking of embellishing them and possibly doing a mini tutorial on simple but sweet embellishments, as well.
